Paid Sick Leave for New Jersey Workers

NJ workers now have the right to take paid sick leave. Temporary, part-time, and full-time workers are eligible under this law.

The definition of “family” is broad. Use your paid sick leave to care for yourself or a family member in cases of:

  • Routine consultations or physical/mental illnesses
  • To receive the COVID-19 vaccine and/or recover from side effects
  • Incidents of sexual or domestic violence
  • Your child's school meetings

Workers obtain 1 hour of leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a limit of 40 hours per year.

It is against the law for your employer to punish you for using paid leave accrued by you or to require you to set up a replacement for your shift. Your employer may not request the presentation of supporting documents, unless you are absent for more than 3 continuous days.
