IACO's origins date back to 1994, when the “Citizenship and Immigration Program” was established at the Passaic Hispanic Information Center (HIC); Already in 1997, when to counteract the negative impact caused by the immigration law reform, the state of New Jersey financially supported the expansion of the immigration and citizenship program in what was called the "Citizenship Project of the Association of Hispanic Directors." . Seven Hispanic organizations participated in this project.

In 1999, when the citizenship project ended and taking advantage of the experience of its coordinators, IACO was legally constituted as a non-profit organization to guarantee the provision of said services to the community. Since its founding, IACO has helped more than 40,000 families, 115 countries of different nationalities in 200 cities of the tri-state area.

In 2006, IACO was approved by the Board of Immigration Appeals to represent low-income families before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). But IACO's management has not been limited only to providing legal advice to its clients in their immigration procedures; During the last decade, IACO has led seminars, conferences and various activities at the state level to educate the community on the issue of migration, primarily promoting the integration of immigrants into society.

Since 2009, IACO has celebrated Immigrant Integration Day in New Jersey. On this day, IACO manages to bring together and communicate community leaders, representatives of the state and federal government, elected officials and representatives of non-profit organizations with immigrants to discuss their points of view regarding the best way to promote integration. from the immigrant to society.

As an organization, IACO is frequently consulted by the media and invited by different social organizations to advise parents, educators, students and the general public on the perspectives of immigration laws.

Currently IACO has 40.000 members and five programs: The Immigration and Citizenship program, the Immigrant Integration program, the Education and Training program, the Elderly Benefits program and the Tax Program.
