DHS Announces Extension of Temporary Protected Status for Venezuela

WASHINGTON— Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas extends Venezuela's designation for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months.

“One of my first actions as secretary was to designate Venezuela to TPS,” Secretary Mayorkas said. “After careful consideration, and in consultation with the Secretary of State, I am today extending that designation. This action is one of many ways the Biden administration is providing humanitarian support to Venezuelans at home and abroad, in conjunction with our regional partners. We will continue to work with our international partners to address regional immigration challenges while ensuring our borders remain secure."

The 18-month extension of TPS for Venezuela will be in effect from September 10, 2022 to March 10, 2024. Only beneficiaries under the current designation of Venezuela, and who were already residing in the United States as of March 8, 2021, are eligible to re-register for TPS under this extension. Venezuelans who arrived in the United States after March 8, 2021 are not eligible for TPS. It is estimated that approximately 343,000 people are eligible for TPS under Venezuela's current designation.

The next Federal Register notice will provide instructions for re-registering for TPS and applying for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) renewal. Venezuelans who are currently eligible for TPS under the existing designation, but have not yet filed an application with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must submit their applications by the September 9 application deadline. 2022, including Venezuelans who are covered under the 2021 Deferred Forced Departure (DED) concession. Venezuela's DED will expire on July 20, 2022.
