Am I eligible for American Citizenship?

Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen is a very important step, as it grants you full rights and responsibilities as a citizen. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) establishes specific requirements that must be met before applying for naturalization. The following are the main eligibility criteria:

Age
You must be at least 18 years old at the time of submitting your naturalization application.

Permanent Resident Status
You must be a legal permanent resident (LPR) and have your Green Card for a specific period:
• 5 years for most applicants, or
• 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.

Residencia Continua
You must have resided continuously in the United States as a legal permanent resident for at least:
• 5 years, or
• 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.

Please note that absences of 6 months or more outside the United States may interrupt this requirement of continuous residence.

Physical Presence
You must have been physically present in the United States for at least:
• 30 months within the 5 years preceding the application, or
• 18 months within the 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen.

Good Moral Character
You must demonstrate good moral character during the required period, which means obeying the laws and paying your taxes. Criminal activities or fraud can negatively affect your eligibility.

Mastery of the English language
You must demonstrate ability to read, write, and speak basic English, unless you qualify for certain exemptions based on your age or a disability.

Civic Knowledge
A fundamental part of the naturalization process is passing an exam on the history and government of the United States (civic education exam). There are exemptions or modifications for some people, depending on their age or the length of time they have lived in the country.

Commitment to the Constitution of the United States
You must demonstrate your commitment to the principles of the United States Constitution and be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

Registration in the Selective Service
If you are a man and were between the ages of 18 and 26 when you lived in the United States, you must have registered with the Selective Service if the law requires it.

Each of these requirements plays a fundamental role in the naturalization process, and the USCIS may request additional documentation or conduct interviews. If you meet these eligibility criteria, you may be ready to begin your path to U.S. citizenship.
