Training and Education for Unemployment Insurance Beneficiaries
Unemployment Insurance (UI) provides vital financial support for those who are temporarily unemployed. While receiving these benefits, people in New Jersey have opportunities to improve their skills through training and education programs. Below you will find information about the available options:
Self-enrolled training
Unemployment Insurance beneficiaries can access training through self-enrolled programs. Applicants must declare their intent to enroll during the weekly application or certification process. Training, which should improve job skills and employability, encompasses vocational, technical training or remedial education. Must be full-time and meet state and local requirements, excluding on-the-job training or employer-funded programs.
Additional Benefits During Training (ABT)
The New Jersey Workforce Development Association extends Unemployment Insurance benefits for qualified workers who participate in approved training beyond the standard period. ABT requires prior approval from an employment counselor. Eligibility is dependent on expressing interest in training within 60 days from last day of work, 30 days from notification of the ABT program, or 30 days from creating an employability plan with a counselor.
Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA)
The TAA is a federal program that helps American workers who have lost or may lose jobs due to foreign trade. Eligible workers enjoy benefits such as training options, Trade Adjustment Allowances, job search allowances, relocation allowances, wage subsidies and tax credits for health coverage. Eligibility is based on loss of employment due to trade-related circumstances, such as increased imports or relocation of operations abroad.

Laid-off workers in New Jersey can access training grants through the Workforce Investment Opportunities Act (WIOA) and the New Jersey Opportunity Partnership Program.
