Tax guide for newlyweds
If you have gotten married, there are several important things to keep in mind to keep your tax information up to date and make your next tax return easier.
Remember that your marital status as of December 31st determines your filing options for the entire tax year. However, there are other steps you should also consider.
Please report any name changes
If you changed your last name after marriage, you must notify the Social Security Administration (SSA). The name on your tax return must match the name on file with the SSA. If they don't match, your refund may be delayed.
To complete this procedure, you must fill out Form SS-5-SP, Application for a Social Security cardYou can get it at ssa.govby calling 800-772-1213 or visiting a local SSA office.
Update your address
If you have changed your address, it is important to notify your new address to:
- The local post office
- Your employer(s)
- I.R.S.
To officially inform the IRS, you will need to complete and submit the Form 8822, Change of AddressDetailed instructions can be found on the second page of the form.
Check your tax withholding
Once married, you must submit a new Form W-4 (Employee Retention Certificate) to your employer within 10 days of the change in marital status.
If both spouses work, the change may affect their tax bracket or subject them to additional Medicare tax. To avoid incorrect withholdings, you can use the Tax Withholding Estimator at [website address missing]. IRS.govThis tool will help you calculate your new withholding tax and correctly complete form W-4.
Check your marital status for tax purposes
Married individuals may choose to file their federal tax return in the following way:
- Joint, or
- Separated
Although filing together is usually more advantageous, it is recommended to compare both options to determine which one best suits your tax situation.
Taking these steps in advance will help you avoid errors and delays in your tax return. Keeping your information up-to-date is key to fulfilling your tax obligations efficiently and smoothly.
