Do you know your employment rights in New Jersey?

1. Paid Family and Medical Leave for NJ Workers: Do you need to be away from work long-term due to pregnancy, childbirth, illness/injury, or to care for a loved one?

You may qualify for paid family leave and/or temporary disability benefits. Most NJ workers qualify for these benefits. Visited myleavebenefits.nj.gov

2. Minimum Wage in New Jersey: NJ has enacted a law to provide for a gradual increase in the minimum wage to $15.*

3. Paid sick leave is the law: You have the right to take care of your loved ones and yourself

  • Employers must provide 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a total of 40 hours per year.
  • It is illegal for employers to retaliate against you for using your paid time off.
  • Use paid sick leave, for physical or mental health issues, to deal with cases of domestic or sexual violence, to attend your child's school appointments, and much more.

4. You have the right to be paid: For all hours worked at a rate of wages not less than the state minimum wagel

Are you eligible to work overtime?You must be paid 1.5 times your hourly wage rate for each hour worked over 40 hours per week.

Do you work on a publicly funded construction project, such as a school? The contractor must pay you the established wage rate for public works

Are you an independent contractor?You could be misclassified and denied unemployment and disability benefits, family leave, minimum wage, equal pay and more. Employers who break the law face fines and penalties.
