Are you eligible for US citizenship?

Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen is a very important step, as it grants you full rights and responsibilities as a citizen. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) sets specific requirements that must be met before applying for naturalization. The main eligibility criteria are listed below:

Age
You must be at least 18 years old at the time you submit your naturalization application.

Permanent Resident Status
You must be a lawful permanent resident (LPR) and have held your Green Card for a specific period:
• 5 years for most applicants, or
• 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen.

Continuous Residence
You must have resided continuously in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least:
• 5 years, or
• 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen.

Please note that absences of 6 months or more outside the United States may interrupt this continuous residence requirement.

Physical presence
You must have been physically present in the United States for at least:
• 30 months within the 5 years prior to the application, or
• 18 months within the 3 years, if married to a U.S. citizen.

Good Moral Character
You must demonstrate good moral character for the required period, which includes complying with the law and paying your taxes. Criminal activity or fraud may adversely affect your eligibility.

English Language Proficiency
You must demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak basic English, unless you qualify for certain exemptions based on your age or a disability.

Civic Knowledge
A key part of the naturalization process is passing a test on U.S. history and government (civics test). Exemptions or modifications are available for some people, depending on their age or the length of time they have lived in the country.

Commitment to the United States Constitution
You must demonstrate your commitment to the principles of the United States Constitution and be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

Selective Service Registration
If you are male and were between 18 and 26 years old while living in the United States, you must have registered with Selective Service if required by law.

Each of these requirements plays a vital role in the naturalization process, and USCIS may request additional documentation or conduct interviews. If you meet these eligibility criteria, you may be ready to begin your path to U.S. citizenship.
