Immigration Relief Available for Those Affected by Unforeseen Circumstances, Including Invasion of Ukraine

US Citizenship and Immigration Services reminds the public that we offer immigration services that could help people affected by extreme circumstances, including the invasion of Ukraine.

The following measures may be available, on a case-by-case basis, upon request:

  • Change to nonimmigrant status or extend a nonimmigrant stay for a person who is currently in the United States. Failure to apply for the extension of stay or change of status before the deadline of your authorized period of admission may be excused if the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond your control;
  • Regranting of a temporary stay permit (parole) to people to whom USCIS had previously granted such permission;
  • Expedited processing of advance permission requests;
  • Expedited adjudication of off-campus employment authorization petitions for F-1 students experiencing severe economic hardship;
  • Expedited adjudication of petitions or applications, including employment authorization, where appropriate;
  • Consideration of fee waivers due to inability to pay;
  • Flexibility for those who have received a Request for Evidence or Notice of Intent to Deny but were unable to present evidence or otherwise respond in a timely manner;
  • Flexibility if you were unable to appear for a scheduled USCIS interview;
  • Expedited replacement of a lost or damaged USCIS-issued immigration document or travel document, such as a permanent resident card (Green Card), Employment Authorization Document, and Arrival/Departure Record ( Form I-94); and
  • Rescheduling a biometric services appointment.

Note: When you apply, please explain how the effect of unforeseen circumstances, such as the invasion of Ukraine, created the need to apply for relief.
