DDU and FLDU Explained: Benefits During Unemployment for Health and Family Reasons

What are DDU and FLDU?

DDU and FLDU are unemployment benefits if you are unable to work for more than 14 days after your last employment with a company covered by NJ Temporary Disability Insurance and you do not have an approved leave of absence.

  • DDU: Applies if you are unemployed due to a physical or mental illness, pregnancy, recovery from childbirth, or an underlying condition that increases the risk of COVID-19.
  • FLDU: Applies if you are unemployed to care for a newborn or newly adopted/placed child, care for a loved one with a serious health condition, or handle matters related to domestic or sexual violence.

DDU Details

  • Eligibility: To qualify in 2024, you must have worked 20 weeks, earning at least $283 per week or $14,200 in total
  • If you apply after UI or FLDU: The DDU claim will begin on the same date as the previous claim and will receive the same benefit rate. You may receive up to 1.5 times the amount of the initial claim.
  • If you apply without prior UI or FLDU: The claim will begin on the Sunday of the week you become unable to work. Benefits will be 60% of your average weekly wage, up to $854 per week, for up to 26 weeks.

FLDU Details

  • Eligibility: To qualify in 2024, you must have worked 20 weeks, earning at least $283 per week or $14,200 total.
  • If you apply after UI or DDU: You will have now met the income requirements and your claim will begin on the same date as before. Benefits will be the same as before, with a maximum of 1.5 times the initial claim amount.
  • If you request without prior UI or DDU: The claim will begin on the Sunday of the week FLDU begins. Benefits will be 60% of your average weekly wage, up to $854 per week, for a maximum of 12 consecutive weeks or 8 intermittent weeks in a 12-month period.
