BEST Project: Better eye health services and treatments

The NJ Department of Human Services Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired believes that all NJ residents have the right to access services that will prevent or limit the impact of vision loss.

We are very proud that for over 35 years, CBVI has provided services in the areas of eye health and eye safety by offering free eye exams for adults and children with a concerted effort to provide these services to historically underserved sections of the population (low level of care). income, elderly, minorities, people with diabetes, and people with special needs).

CBVI's Project BEST program works to save and restore sight whenever medically possible. Services include:

  • Mobile eye exam unit; eye exams for preschool and school age children
  • Monthly or bi-weekly eye exams at more than 28 fixed sites across the state
  • Detection in institutions and communities
  • Special diabetes screening and awareness programs
  • and other specialized eye exam programs that target historically underserved populations (i.e., minorities or the elderly)

Project BEST also provides follow-up services to people who need further vision evaluations or vision care services, who do not have health insurance and do not qualify for other state programs. With this service we have been able to prevent permanent vision loss in many cases and improve the quality of life in others.
