Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen is an important step for many immigrants, as it grants them full rights and responsibilities as citizens. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) sets out specific requirements that must be met before applying for naturalization. Below are the main eligibility criteria:

Age

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of filing the application for naturalization.

Permanent Resident Status

You must be a lawful permanent resident (LPR) and have had the Green Card for a specific period:

5 years for most applicants, or

3 years if you are married to a US citizen.

Continuous Residence

You must have resided continuously in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for at least:

5 years, or

3 years if you are married to a US citizen.

Absences from the U.S. of 6 months or more may interrupt the continuous residence requirement.

Physical presence

Applicants must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least:

30 months during the 5 years prior to application, or

18 months during the 3 years if you are married to a US citizen.

Good Moral Character

You must demonstrate good moral character during the required period, which includes obeying laws and paying taxes. Criminal activity or fraud may negatively affect eligibility.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to read, write and speak basic English, unless they qualify for certain exemptions based on age or disability.

Civic Knowledge

A key part of the naturalization process is passing a test on U.S. history and government (the civics test), with waivers or modifications available to some individuals based on age or long-term residence.

Commitment to the United States Constitution

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution and be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

Selective Service Registration

Male applicants between the ages of 18 and 26 must have registered with the Selective Service if required by law.

Each of these requirements plays a critical role in the naturalization process, and USCIS may require additional documentation or interviews. If you meet these eligibility criteria, you may be ready to begin your path to U.S. citizenship!
