Extension of TPS for El Salvador, Sudan and Ukraine

Important Information about Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

Before beginning any application process with immigration, it is essential that you consult with an expert on the subject to ensure that you qualify for the program in question.

What is TPS?
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is an immigration program in the United States that provides protection to individuals from certain countries facing exceptional conditions, such as natural disasters, armed conflict, or humanitarian crises. Individuals who qualify for TPS can legally live and work in the U.S. for the duration of the program designation for their country.

Important aspects of TPS:

  • TPS does not offer a direct path to permanent residency or U.S. citizenship.
  • Those who are TPS beneficiaries can obtain a work permit and a Social Security number, and are protected from deportation during the duration of the program.
  • TPS also allows travel outside the U.S., as long as the appropriate form is completed to obtain travel permission and a humanitarian reason for returning to the United States is justified.

Requirements to apply for TPS:

  • Be a national of a country that has been designated for TPS.
  • Demonstrate physical presence in the U.S. on the established dates.
  • Meet good moral character requirements (no criminal record, both in the US and abroad).
  • Arriving in the U.S. before the deadline set by the Department of Homeland Security.

Important Dates and Deadlines: Immigration always announces deadlines for registering for TPS. It is essential that you register within the established deadline to avoid problems with your legal status.

Re-registration for TPS Extension: TPS beneficiaries will be required to re-register if an extension of the program is granted in order to maintain their temporary protected status.

Important Information on TPS Re-registration and Recent Extensions

It is critical to remember that re-registration for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) must be completed within the specific time frame indicated by the Department of Homeland Security. Failure to re-register within this period may result in the loss of TPS benefits.
