Social Security payments change in 2025
Did you know that the Social Security Administration hasn't been mailing checks like it used to for some time now? That's right. Currently, all payments are made electronically, providing a faster, safer, and more reliable way to receive your benefits each month. Starting September 30, 2025, Social Security will no longer issue paper checks for benefit payments. If you're not yet familiar with this payment method, don't worry. Here's what you need to know.
What are electronic payments?
Electronic payments are direct deposits that Social Security makes into your bank account or onto a special card called Direct Express.
This means you no longer have to wait for a check in your mailbox or go to the bank to deposit it.
Why did the system change?
This change was implemented for:
- Preventing lost or stolen checks
- Ensure you receive your money faster
What should you do if you're still receiving checks or want to change your payment method?
If you haven't received your benefits electronically yet, it's important to take action as soon as possible. You have two options:
- Direct deposit to your bank or credit union: All you need is your account number and bank routing number.
- Direct Express Card: This card is similar to a debit card. Your money will arrive automatically each month, and you can use it to make purchases or withdraw cash.
How can you make the change?
You can update your payment method through the following options:
- Calling (877) 874-6347 (they offer support in Spanish)
- Visiting your local Social Security office
- Entering the website: godirect.org
What if you don't have a bank account?
No problem. In that case, the Direct Express card is a safe and free alternative.
You don't need a credit history or a minimum balance to use it.
Remember: Your money is safe with the electronic system. Get informed, make a decision, and make the change. It's your right and your peace of mind.
