Request your tax return in a few steps

You can access your previous tax returns and other tax records in several ways. These documents are useful for future tax returns and other financial transactions. It's recommended to keep copies of federal tax returns and related documents for at least three years after filing.

Options for obtaining tax records

  1. IRS Online Account

The quickest and easiest way to access your tax records is through the IRS Online AccountFrom there, you will be able to:

  • View, print, or download your tax transcripts.
  • Check how much you owe.
  • View your payment history.
  • View your adjusted gross income (AGI) from previous years.
  • Access other tax records.

If you don't have an online account with the IRS and can't create one, there are other options available.

  1. Contact the software provider or tax preparer

If you used a software provider or tax preparer to file your return, you can contact them directly to request a copy of your filed return.

  1. Request a transcript from the IRS

If you're unable to obtain a complete copy of your return, you can request a free transcript from the IRS. This includes basic information about the return you filed and any subsequent changes. It's available for up to three years after the IRS processes the return.

Options for requesting a transcript:

  • By mail: You can complete and submit the Form 4506-T o 4506-T-EZ to the IRS. Form 4506-T allows you to request various records: tax account transcripts, income history, verification of non-filing, among others.
  • By phone: You can also call 800-908-9946 to request a transcript, which will be mailed to your home address.

To protect your identity, the transcripts partially obscure personal information such as your name, address, and Social Security number, although they show full financial figures, including adjusted gross income.

If you need a complete copy of a previous tax return, you can request one from the IRS by mailing the Form 4506, along with the corresponding payment. Each copy costs $43Returns can be requested for the current fiscal year and up to seven previous years.
