New Jersey residents will be able to schedule driver's license appointments regardless of immigration status

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC) is committed to implementing driver's licenses for all persons residing in the state of New Jersey, regardless of immigration status, as seamlessly as possible. We are working collaboratively with the Office for New Americans (ONA) at the New Jersey Department of Human Services to develop information and resources to help the community facilitate this process.
As previously announced NJMVC will provide licenses regardless of immigration status to persons residing in the state of New Jersey. New Jersey residents will be able to begin scheduling appointments for these licenses starting May 1, 2021.
“State-neutral licensing is important to many New Jerseyans, but MVC's lawsuits due to COVID-19 have made it impossible for us to complete the training and software changes required to implement them,” said Sue Fulton Administrator. of the Motor Vehicle Commission.
The Motor Vehicle Commission has implemented many changes in recent months, changing most of the online transactions, however, demand remains high at MVC agencies, while the staff in them has been reduced due to COVID -19.
NJ MVC has released new and improved resources for first time drivers on the MVC website.
The First Driver License / ID website was revised and optimized to make it easier for new drivers to obtain a New Jersey driver's license, regardless of immigration status. New tools have also been added to this website, including answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and a video guide for first-time drivers. All new resources and information are available in English and Spanish.
The public is encouraged to consult the First Driver License / ID web page and the main MVC web site in the coming weeks. NJMVC.gov for up-to-date information.
“We anticipate an increase in demand for first-time driver licenses and permits, especially once we began licensing drivers regardless of immigration status,” said MVC Administrator Sue Fulton. "Updating the new resources and guidance will help make the process of obtaining your first license in New Jersey easier."
All customers wishing to obtain a license in New Jersey should use the resources on the MVC website and the NJ Driver's Manual, which also is available online in English and Spanish.
New Jersey drivers are granted phased driving privileges. Although the requirements of the state Driver's License Program differ based on the applicant's age, there are three steps to obtaining a license in New Jersey:
