Guide to Social Security Benefits for Spouses
Social Security is an important safety net for many seniors. However, sometimes people may not have enough Social Security benefits or credits. Fortunately, there may be a solution for some if they qualify for Social Security spousal benefits.
What are Social Security Spouse Benefits?
Social Security spousal benefits are additional benefits awarded to the spouse of a Social Security beneficiary. These benefits can be up to 50% of the beneficiary's benefits once the spouse reaches full retirement age. To receive full benefits, the spouse must also reach full retirement age. If the spouse begins receiving benefits before reaching full retirement age, the benefits will be permanently reduced.
An exception to this rule is if the spouse is caring for a child under the age of 16 or a person with disabilities who is entitled to spousal benefits.
It is possible to receive both retirement benefits and spousal benefits if you are eligible. The retirement benefits you are entitled to will always be paid first. If the spousal benefits are higher than the retirement benefits, the spousal benefits will be provided instead. These benefits will match the amount received by the spouse with the higher benefit.
How Can You Qualify for Social Security Spouse Benefits?
To be eligible for these benefits:
- The spouse must be receiving Social Security benefits, although these may be relatively low.
- You must be at least 62 years old or be caring for a child under age 16 or a child with disabilities who is eligible for spousal benefits.
